We’ve split this article up into outdoor courts and indoor pickleball courts in Indianapolis. Of course, the outdoor courts are almost always free to play at. And the indoor courts almost always cost money.

In Indy, pickleball is typically played outside when the weather is nice and indoors when the weather isn’t so nice (too hot, raining, windy, or just plain winter). However, even if the weather is nice sometimes people will play indoors because maybe the competition is more consistent or they feel like there will definitely be people there to play. What I mean is, showing up to an outdoor pickleball court (usually at a park) can be hit or miss depending on the day. Typically, well run indoor facilities have a pretty consistent schedule of when people will show up. However, sometimes outdoor parks do as well.

As an example, last year (2023) Lee Road Park was a great place to play. You could almost always find games in the morning around 8am or 10am and in the evening starting around 5pm. However, this year, it’s been much more hit and miss. It seems like Meadowlark in Carmel has replaced it a bit as the best outdoor place to play in the area, besides maybe Ellenberger.

Summary: Great place to play indoors. Probably the best open play right now in Indy. Open play is segmented by DUPR skill level (or personal assessment the club does) so you are only playing with people your skill level.

Very nice facility. Great nets, courts, etc. The courts are a little close to each other but there’s not another facility in Indy that is going to have any wider courts. Courts are separated by Joola and Selkirk barriers to keep balls from getting into other courts. They will get into other courts more frequently than fences as the barriers are lower than a fence would be.

The lighting is direct which makes it hard to see the balls sometimes. And there are white walls a little bit halfway up where the ball can get lost. But that’s being very picky as it’s not really that bad.

If I had to pick a place to play right now, I would pick IPC based off of the consistency of open play competition due to segmenting of open play.

Best Feature: Again, it’s the open play. Best open play in the area in my opinion.

Summary: The Picklr is the most well known facility brand in Pickleball. They have 2 locations in Indy currently with plans for 1-3 more.

The Picklr is on the pricier end but the price reflects the quality of the facility, courts & other things like level of access. For example, if you join The Picklr you have access to all facilities in Indy as well as all Picklr’s nationwide, which is a pretty great perk for people who travel.

The courts are top notch. Permanent pickleball courts, great nets, etc. At the Keystone location the courts are a little tight on the side and in the back. At the Noblesville location some courts have a ton of room (there’s a championship court with stadium seating for example, as well as other courts with good spacing) while others are a little tight??? The walls are all black so you’re not going to lose a ball but the lights are direct, so if a ball pops up you may get blinded for a second. They do have some protection on the lights that limits this a bit but it’s still an issue, although you’ll look up into them only rarely while playing.

You use an app to reserve courts, check in, etc. and manage your membership in general which makes things more seamless than most places.

Open play is the life blood of pickleball. It’s how you get the most consistent games and how you meet new people. Open play here is going to better than most places in Indy. The Picklr has a critical mass of members so open play is going to have consistent numbers most of the time. While open play does segment into “beginner”, “intermediate” and “advanced”??? it’s not as heavily segmented as it could be, which means sometimes you have players playing in advanced that should be in intermediate, beginners in intermediate who should be in beginner, etc. But keep in mind, some facilities in Indy don’t even have segmented open play. So, the fact that they offer it at least is a good start. I am told there are plans to change this in the future and we’ll update accordingly when those changes happen.

Overall, the Picklr is a great facility. If you’re looking for a place to call you pickleball home, I would certainly consider the Picklr. I play here and it’s the best public facility in my opinion in terms of the quality of the facility, courts, etc. It is a little pricier and that’s because of everything aforementioned.
